One of the first people in the world to get his hands on the new iPhone swiftly had his heart in his mouth… when he dropped it on the floor.

The man, who was identified by local media as Jack Cooksey, was at the front of the queue in Perth, Australia, to pick up an iPhone 6, which is priced at over £500 in the UK.

Television cameras focused in on him as he excitedly opened the box, but his happiness soon turned to panic as it crashed onto the floor.

At long last, Windows users, the Start menu will be coming back. A new series of leaked pictures provided by German website ComputerBase give us our best look yet at Windows 9, including the newly redesigned Start menu that users have been begging for since the release of Windows 8 in 2012.

As you can see in the picture, the new Start menu looks much like the old one in terms of overall layout but its icons and general design have been updated to fit in with the “Modern” UI that Microsoft has been pushing for the last two years. You can also see a search icon next to the Start menu, which will presumably be a quicker shortcut to universal search on Windows 9 than opening up the Start menu and searching.

The picture above also gives us a nice look at the notifications center that Microsoft will be bringing to our desktops. It pops up on the right-hand side of your screen and will presumably function much like notifications centers on our smartphones by letting us know when we have new emails and or alerting us to various interactions on different social media platforms. Earlier leaks that we’ve seen claim that there will be a button that will let us clear off all our notifications at once, although we sadly don’t see it in these leaked pictures.

All told, this looks like a promising compromise between the changes that Microsoft introduced in Windows 8 and the more traditional desktop interface that many longtime Windows users have been asking for.

Leaked 'Windows 9' screenshots reveal more detail about reborn Start Menu

It's no secret that an upcoming Windows update codenamed 'Threshold' will herald the return of the Start menu and allow Metro apps to operate in windowed mode. Heck, the image above came straight from Microsoft itself. But whenever fresh screenshots of the interface show up it's always worth taking a look.

Myce.com recently nabbed two screenshots from a purported recent build of Threshold, which is expected to be called Windows 9 when it debuts in 2015. Right now, however, these internal builds are labeled Windows 8.1 Pro—a fact that Neowinnoted earlier in July when it also nabbed a screenshot of the Start menu.

The Myce and Neowin shots are very similar and aren't all that different from what we saw in April, when Microsoft officially announced the Start menu was coming back. On the left-hand side of the new Start menu you'll have a list of recently used apps as well as an option to view a list of "All apps." (The terminology seems to be a catch-all for both desktop programs and Metro apps.)

Presumably, as with the original versions of the Start menu, you'll be able to pin apps to this list.

To the right of the apps list is an area with pinned metro apps for easy access and at-a-glance live tiles for apps like weather, mail, news, and calendar. The new Start menu seems to be customizable, with it tile sizes appearing adjustable, just as they are now on the Start screen.

One difference from the April sneak peek is that regular desktop features are also pinned to the metro side. Both the Myce and Neowin screenshots, for example, show icons for the Pictures and Documents folders, as well as what looks like a "My PC/This PC" tile.

Start menu takes over

Most desktop users are excited about the notion that the Start menu will return. Even better it may actually put metro apps to good use for those of us who boot to the desktop.

But Microsoft may have different plans. The Verge reported late Monday that Microsoft is testing versions of the Start menu that take over the entire screen and act more like the current Start screen in Windows 8.1 (while also confirming Myce's screenshots as legit, according to its sources).

What The Verge doesn't mention, however, is whether this will happen on all devices running Threshold. A report from Windows watcher Paul Thurrott earlier in July said the expanded Start menu would be the default option for tablets and other touch-based devices that lack a keyboard. This interface, Thurrott said, would be "a full-screen Start menu that looks and works a lot like the Start screen does now." Regular PCs, however, would get the more traditional Start menu as seen in the Myce and Neowin leaked screenshots.

In addition to another look at the Start menu, Myce also published a screenshot showing the Windows Store operating in windowed mode.

One of the problems that I have encountered when using Windows 8 on tablet pc is to lock the screen and turn off display. Android and iOS machines normally have power buttons which would do the job. However the power button for windows tablet (mine is Acer Ultrabook) is limited to sleep and hibernate mode. These modes stop the system including ongoing tasks such as downloading process. There must be a way to lock the screen, turn off the display but at the same time allows ongoing processes to continue until they are complete.

The following tutorial helps you to add this function to your desktop context menu. However, you are expected to have some basic skills in windows file management in order to follow the steps. Beware, if you do not follow the steps properly, you may corrupt your windows registry!

I have tried it out and it worked on my tablet.

This tutorial will show you how to add Lock Computer and Turn Off Monitor to the desktop context menu inWindows 7 and Windows 8.

When used by a user, it will lock the computer and turn off the display (monitors). To return to Windows, you would just need to move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard to turn on the display (monitors) again, then log on from the lock computer screen.

   Note

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to add this to the desktop context menu, but all users on the computer will be able to use the context menu.

EXAMPLE: "Lock Computer and Turn Off Monitor" added to Desktop Context Menu

 

Here's How:

1. Do either step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.

2. To Add "Lock Computer and Turn Off Monitor" to Context Menu

A) Download the 32-bit or 64-bit version of NirCmd at the bottom of the website below that is the same as your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, and save the ZIP file to your desktop.

B) Open the downloaded ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the nircmd.exe file to your desktop, and unblock the file.

C) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below, and save the .bat to your desktop.

Turn_Off_Monitor_and_Lock_Computer.bat

D) Unblock the .bat file.

E) Move both the unblocked nircmd.exe file and unblocked Turn_Off_Monitor_and_Lock_Computer.bat file into your C:\Windows\System32 folder, and approve (Continue-Yes).
NOTE: The .bat file must have this exact name. Rename if needed.

F) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .reg file below, and save the .reg file to your desktop.

Add_Lock-Computer_Turn_Off_Monitor_to_Context_Menu.reg

G) Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it, then click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted to approve the merge.

3. To Remove "Lock Computer and Turn Off Monitor" from Context Menu

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below.

B) Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it, then click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted to approve the merge.

C) In Windows Explorer (Windows 7) or File Explorer (Windows 8), navigate to C:\Windows\System32, and delete the nircmd.exe and Turn_Off_Monitor_and_Lock_Computer.bat files.
